Sing it, Act it, Shake it

Oh, what a day! We are so very proud of each and every child in this class. They took to the stage today like professionals. :0) Our morning started by getting costumes on and waiting on stage for our first guests to arrive. We sang our opening song as we waited. The first show was awesome! The audience appeared to like it, and we had time to leisurely change out of our costumes. Snack was the next item on the agenda. It was so nice to have a relaxing time with nothing to rush back to.
After snack, we changed back into our costumes. We then had time to enjoy some videos of Broadway musicals. Below are some links for you to check out if you'd like. Our second performance was even better than the first. Our audience actually laughed... quite a bit. That is always so much fun.
Our day wasn't quite as fast paced, but there were a lot of tired faces walking out today. If possible, try to get them to take a little down time tomorrow afternoon.
Please have kids to SEEK by 5:10 tomorrow evening to get ready for our show. We will be starting the show at 5:20 p.m. We can't wait for you to see!!

THIS is when it all starts coming together! We did our first real dress rehearsals today WITH all of our costume changes. These kiddos did an INCREDIBLE job! Once again, we can tell just how focused they are.
We took time for stretching and warm ups today. Then we costumed up and got started with the "official" rehearsal. We took a quick snack break and came back to finish up costumes. Mushrooms' hats are awesome! Starfish's t-shirts were bedazzled. Our kingsnake finished up her shirt. While all of that costuming was going on, the mushrooms worked on the ending of their choreography with Ms. Hitchcock.
We had time for one last rehearsal. This one went even better than the first one!!! They are gaining confidence each and every time. Before leaving, we did some complement time. We love seeing these kiddos grow, but it's even better when their peers recognize how far they've come. People are starting to add little bits to their characters. There's a lot of talent in this group!
Tomorrow is our first performance day. Students from other SEEK classes will be coming in to watch at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday. It is so much fun when all their hard work and dedication have paid off!

It's hard to believe, but we are in the final stretch of Project SEEK. That brings with it lots of excitement and that last push of work to make our show the best it can be for when you see us perform.
Today we started the day with stretching and movement. Mrs. Bakken took characters in shifts who needed to paint their t-shirts. I believe the starfish, leopard geckos, Hercules beetle, and kingsnake all took their turns with the paint brushes again today. Things are really coming together in the costume department. We will be doing our first run through with costumes tomorrow!!
As costumes were being created, the rest of us were going through the choreography for all the songs. We're just working on tightening some things up... and Ms. Hitchcock is still making a few changes. Those poor mushrooms WILL have an ending to their dance come tomorrow. :0)
We did a full run through after snack break with practices for ALL costume changing. Tomorrow will be the real test as we truly make those changes.
At the end of the day, we had groups still needing pictures and information for their posters. We spent some time in the lab and classroom working on those. Things ARE really coming together.
One more reminder:
Open House is this Thursday, June 29 from 5-7 p.m. Our class does one performance at 5:20 p.m. We ask that the kids arrive by 5:10 to get their costumes on and get ready.

Please forgive us for the lack of update yesterday. Ms. Hitchcock had to be gone for an obligation with her school district, so Mrs. Benson stepped in to work with Mrs. Bakken. The day was incredible! The biome scenery is beautifully done. They were able to get through two run/sing/ dance throughs with some good laughs along the way. They did a biome/ adaptation scavenger hunt through the hallways. You'll be able to check out some of the critters they learned about when you are at Open House. They spent time working in their teams to create their biome posters. They will be finishing them up and sharing them with the class next week. Since it was raining, they played some games in the gym instead of having a break outside. I believe that a great time was had by all.
Today brought a new facet to the show... risers!! We believe we have all the kiddos placed correctly on stage. We did a longer run through, so we could block movement on the stage and practice exits and entrances for costume changes. When the risers arrive, things get real. :0)
Mrs. Bakken was working her heart out on costuming today. You can see some macaws and grass in the slideshow above. Some other items that came out were polar bear hats and cacti stems. It is all rather amazing.
We also finished choreographing all the songs. We will need to work on polishing them up next week, but this is a huge accomplishment.
Next Thursday, June 29 from 5-7 p.m. Our class does one performance at 5:20 p.m. We ask that the kids arrive by 5:10 to get their costumes on and get ready. We only do one performance for several reasons. By the end of a regular day, they are pretty tired. I'm not sure they would have the energy for two performances. We don't really get to see any of the other SEEK classes, so this gives you time to tour those other classrooms. The last reason is that some families have a child in our class and the Shakespeare's Kids class. We try to start at this time in hopes that they can make it to the second performance in time.

Today was a busy one! I feel like I say that every day. :0) Research was our first focus today. The pictures above show groups working with biome books. They also spent a little time in the computer lab, but I forgot my camera to take pictures. Tomorrow they will have a bit more time to research plants, animals, and the climate of their biome. Once ready, they are going to create posters. Be sure to look for them on Open House night.
Mrs. Bakken is working like crazy on costumes. I know the kids are itching to wear the pieces that are done. More work will continue on costumes as this week progresses. We might give you a couple sneak peeks!
After snack, we discussed lunch plans for tomorrow. We voted on kinds of pizza and the kinds of veggies they want. It looks like pickles (a yearly favorite), carrots, and cucumbers are on the menu. Just a reminder to send in $5 for lunch if you haven't already done so.
A read/sing/ dance through also happened after snack. It is so fun to see the pieces fall into place. We had just enough time to fit in the choreography for our opening number as well as the leopard gecko song. As we were packing up to go home the past two days, I had students ask me if it was already time to go home. We are working hard AND having lots of fun!
A reminder that tomorrow is our extended day. Students will be starting off the morning planning and painting their section of scenery with their team from today. I wish I had taken a picture as our room is going to be very different when they walk in tomorrow. They will be doing a fun scavenger hunt, run throughs of the show, biome posters and a whole lot more.
Thanks for all the help and support at home!

Well, I think we wore them out today. Who knew choreography could be so exhausting? :0) We started our morning off talking about costuming. The kids had some great ideas. I mean, we never thought pointy party hats would go with starfish, but Makenna sure did. They are on order! We put together a list of costume needs. You can see it below. I emailed out a copy and sent a copy home with your child. Please try to have all costumes brought in by the end of the week. That being said, if you already have something, send it in as soon as possible. Some t-shirts will need to be painted.
We started a read-through before snack, took a break, and finished it after snack. Then came the big task... dance moves. We learned the polar bear, grass, and mushroom dances. Woo Hoo!!! We weren't surprised when they asked if we could take a little break. :0)
Tomorrow we are starting off our day with some biome research. Your child might be asking to do some research and print some pictures at home. We are OK with that if you are.
Just a reminder to send in $5 for lunch plans on Thursday, and homework remains the same... keep memorizing.

Happy Monday! There was no rest for our kiddos today. We did some good stretching and warm up dancing this morning and set right into practicing. Our first read/sing through was a bit sleepy, but certainly wasn't bad at all. We had time to choreograph the starfish song before snack break. They worked so hard. Some of the steps are a little tricky, but that's why we started with this one first.
We did a second read/sing through after snack. They were looking a bit tired, so we worked on getting to know each other a little better. With our last bit of time, we worked on singing the songs with just the instrumental songs. They really stepped up their game.
Tomorrow we will be talking costumes and will share a costume list on this website. We will also send home a printed copy with your child.
Extended day is THURSDAY. We will be staying on site to create all of the biomes for our scenery. Please send your child in something that they can paint in. We will also be having a pizza smorgasbord lunch. Please send $5 with your child for lunch.
Homework remains work on memorization of lines and songs. Tomorrow brings more dancing. :0)

WOW!! These kids have officially blown our minds... and it is only the second day of class. WHAT?! When the kids came in this morning, they had a Post-it note waiting on their desks. They got to write down two or more of their favorite songs from the show. Later in the morning, many of them were given another part to sing with another group. They also had the opportunity to sign up to sing a solo in the show. They got to pick one of the songs they are singing, and we worked out their favorite part to sing as their solo.
We did THREE, yes three, read/sing throughs today. We have never had time to get through the script three times. It just shows how engaged and focused they are. We grouped them off by their parts, so they could start to get to know more people in the class. By the last time through, almost everyone was singing their solo parts.
Don't even get me started on the singing. Both Mrs. Bakken and I looked at each other and asked if we ever had such confident and loud singers before. I'm pretty sure the answer to that on day two is NO. We walked out today with huge smiles on our faces. We are hoping your child is feeling the excitement that we are.
Please keep working on memorizing those parts over the weekend. Next week will bring blocking parts on the stage and choreographing dances.
Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there!

The photos above may not look too exciting, but this group was BUSY today. We took a little tour, learned everyone's names, listened to a read through of the script, had a snack break, tried out for parts, worked on a biome word search while Ms. Hitchcock and Mrs. Bakken were trying to figure out parts, found out our parts, and went home. I'm not sure if the kids are tired, but the teachers sure are. :0)
As we told the kids, the parts they got today are just a start. Almost every child will have two parts. We will hand out solo parts to the kids who would like one. There is choreography and blocking that will bring these parts to life. This is such a fun show with great characters. We know there may be some sad kiddos out there who didn't get the part they REALLY wanted, but we hope they grow to love the parts they have. We just know they are going to bring them all to life!
Homework for tonight is to highlight all their assigned speaking parts AND the Chorus parts in the songs. They can also begin memorizing speaking parts.
We are SO EXCITED! This class is overflowing with talent!
