ON Thursday, we will visit the snack shop. Items are no more than $1. You can send a dollar or two with your child to purchase something if you would like.
Day 10
Today, we had the opportunity to watch the Sing it, Act it, Shake it performance. The students in this class did a fantastic job. Our students enjoyed the performance and look forward to this option for Project SEEK next year.
After the performance, we finished our blood models. Then we started learning about the nervous system. We learned that the brain has enough electricity to light a lightbulb. We also learned that the brain and nerves are the boss of our body. It plays a role in everything we do at any given moment.

Day 9
Today, we learned all about the circulatory system. We learned that it takes 60 seconds for the blood in our body to make a trip throughout the whole body. We also learned that arteries carry oxygen rich blood to the body, while veins care oxygen depleted blood back to the heart. The blood in the veins go back to the lungs to get more oxygen.
Day 8
Today, we continued learning about the digestive system. We learned that the small intestine is 22 feet long and the large intestine is about 5 feet long. We were amazed with the length of the intestine and how it fits into our bodies. Today, we finished learning about the digestive system.
Day 7
Today, we finished up our lung model. We had fun making their lung models and trying them out. We also started learning about the digestive system.
Day 6
We finally got to go to the Science Museum. We had so much fun seeing the Human Body and Sportsology exhibits. Each group also had time to explore other exhibits at the museum.
Day 5
Today, we finished our hand model. We hit a few bumps in the road with the final step, but we made it. Everyone enjoyed having a "hand" to get a better idea on how the muscles in our hand works.
We also started learning about the respiratory system. We learned that an adult breathes in 2,100 gallons of oxygen every day. We also learned that the left lung is smaller than the right, this makes room for the heart. We did two quick activities for this system. One was breathing rate, we started by counting how many breathes we took in in 15 seconds. Then we did an activity to get our heart rate up and counted the number of breathes we took in 15 seconds again. We found that our breath count went up after being active. This helped us to understand that the more active we are the more oxygen our body needs. The second activity we did today was to see how long we could hold our breath.

Day 4
We finished learning about the muscular system today. We wrote interesting facts that we learned and did two activities to go along with this system. The first activity showed students how our muscles get tired when doing an activity a number of times. For this activity, we used stress balls. Students squeezed the ball for thirty seconds then rested for ten seconds. We repeated this four times, by the end students arms were very tired. The second activity we did today was begin to build our hand model. This model shows how the muscles in the hand move our fingers.
Day 3
Today, we wrote interesting facts about the skeletal system. We then moved on to learning about the muscular system. We learned that our bodies have more than 630 muscles and that it takes more muscles to frown than smile. We also learned that we have three different kinds of muscles; cardiac, skeletal, and smooth. Some muscles are involuntary, we don't think about that muscle moving, such as the heart. While other muscles are voluntary, for these muscles, the brain sends a message to the muscle to move.
Tomorrow, we will finish learning about the muscular system and complete our model for this system.

DAy 2
We learned about the skeletal system today and made a model of the layers of the bone. We learned that there are four layers to a bone: bone marrow, spongy bone, compact bone, and the periosteum. We also learned that the largest bone in the femur (thigh bone) and the smallest bones are found in the ear.
Tomorrow, we will finish our last activity on the skeletal system and then start learning about the muscular system.

Day 1
Today, we got to know each other. We made a list of what we already know about the human body, there were many great things shared on this list. We also created our doctor bags, which will hold all of our materials we use to learn about each system.
Tomorrow, we will start learning about the skeletal system.

How it works: the Human Body
During our twelve days together, we will learn about six body systems. We will start with the skeletal system, then we will learn about the muscular system. The other systems we will learn about are respiratory, digestive, circulatory, and finally the nervous system. Our learning will include activities, discussions, reading, and hands-on projects.
Please check this site on a regular basis, we will update with what we learned and pictures of the activities and projects we complete.
